We regularly tout the fact that our Beyond Organic dark chocolate is gluten-free, but I was recently asked, “What about the beverages?” This month’s tip is provided courtesy of the incredible and oh-so-friendly Beyond Organic Customer Service team. I reached out to ask them for the Celiac disease and gluten-free 411 and here was the response:
The nutritional analysis for all of our beverages – Reign Supreme, Reign Infusions, Amasai and SueroViv – indicate levels below 20 parts per million on gluten. This is the measurement the FDA/USDA guidelines stipulate for a product to be considered Gluten Free. We have not labeled them yet, but are considering it for the future.
Certified gluten free is a very specific process with an organization that sets guidelines and audits manufacturers of foods and beverages to make sure they are following these standards. They then “approve or certified” the company and provide them the logo.
The USDA mandates that products containing less than 20 parts per million of gluten can be labeled or referred to as gluten free. We have done the testing to validate that our products that we refer to as “gluten-free” do in fact have less than 20ppm. We just don’t go through a third-party or use their logo as we know the guidelines and do the testing ourselves.
So, there you have it, folks! Spread the word to those you know with Celiac disease and those trying to limit their gluten intake. This is good info to keep on-hand!
