Natural Remedies for the Common Cold

Natural Cold RemediesWith an almost-two-year-old running around the house, the common cold is sure to bite us every once in a while.

Thankfully, I’ve compiled some of the best homeopathic remedies for the common cold in beverage form, and I’ve added my own little twists to incorporate better products and faster results.

Terrain Liquid HerbalsYou’ll notice I incorporate Terrain Living Herbals–a supplement from Beyond Organic–in each of my recipes. These could be described as similar to apple cider vinegar, but they truly go beyond by providing expanded benefits associated with historically celebrated botanicals like Star Anise, Ginger, and Sacred Herbs which I used in all of my cold remedies.

As far as I’m concerned, these are life-savers when a cold is trying to get you down. Drink up!

1. Emergen-Tea

Emergen-TeaThis is my favorite way to start a yucky day, but don’t discount the effects of this potent drink in the late morning, afternoon, or evening; it works at any time. In fact, this is the first thing I drink when I begin to get a tickle in the back of my throat. Drink quickly, and drink often.

Tim Ferriss, the author of one of my favorite motivational books for business, The 4-Hour Workweek, offers a recipe based on ancient Chinese cures: boiled ginger and orange peel. I’ve taken that idea as a base, and then added probiotics, immune-boosting nutrition, and flavorful elements to really knock your cold out FAST.

  • 1 T. Terrain Liquid Herbals (I use Sacred Herbs, Ginger, or Echinacea)
  • 1 T. raw honey
  • 1/2 organic lemon, juiced
  • 1 inch of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
  • Peel from 1/2 an organic orange
  • 1 C. filtered water
  • 1 bag of organic peppermint tea (make sure it’s real peppermint and not flavor)

Boil your water, reduce heat to a simmer, and add ginger for 10 minutes. Add orange peel and simmer another 10 minutes. Strain your water, pour into a mug, add your tea bag, and allow to steep for 5 minutes. Remove tea bag and add honey, lemon, and Terrain. Stir well until honey is melted, and drink while hot.

2. Immune Booster Shooter

Immune Booster ShooterThis is so easy to make and throws a mighty punch for such a small amount!

  • 2 T. Terrain Liquid Herbals (I used Ginger)
  • 2 T. raw honey
  • 2 T. cold filtered water
  • 1/4 t. organic cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 t. organic ground ginger

Mix all ingredients together in a jar and shake vigorously before taking a shot (1 Tablespoon should do).

  • 3 oz. spiced rum
  • 2 T. raw honey
  • 1/2 organic lemon, juiced

4. Sweet Tonic Tea

Sweet Tonic TeaThe Delighted Momma offers a suggestion for a chilled beverage to beat your cold, and my secret weapon makes all the difference.

I use Terrain 2Go Tonic 10–the ultimate zero calorie, cleansing and energizing beverage–whenever I’m drinking a chilled cold remedy. Each bottle contains ten unique fermented botanicals combined with structured water to deliver the ultimate health drink.

  • 16oz Terrain 2Go Tonic 10
  • 8oz cold filtered water
  • 4 T. organic apple juice
  • 4 T. Terrain Liquid Herbals (I use Star Anise)
  • 1 tsp of cinnamon

Mix all ingredients together in a pitcher–the cinnamon will not dissolve so you’ll want to stir before pouring–and enjoy over ice.
